Mon Jan 06 18:51:23 UTC 2025: ## India Issues HMPV Virus Advisory After Cases Surface
**Bengaluru, India** – Following reports of a rapidly spreading Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China, India has seen a surge in concern after confirmed cases emerged in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Initial reports of two cases in Bengaluru sparked anxieties, but the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Ministry of Health have since released a statement clarifying the virus’s severity and treatment options.
At least five cases have now been reported across India, with two children each infected in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and at least one case confirmed in Rajasthan. The virus, believed to have originated in China, primarily affects the respiratory system.
Authorities are advising the public to take precautions similar to those used during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as maintaining hygiene and practicing social distancing, to mitigate the spread of HMPV. While the ICMR has downplayed widespread panic, the ministry is closely monitoring the situation and urging individuals to seek medical attention if they experience respiratory symptoms.
