Tue Jan 07 09:37:00 UTC 2025: ## Two More HMPV Cases Confirmed in India, But No National Surge Detected
**Nagpur, India** – Two new cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been confirmed in Nagpur, Maharashtra, bringing the total number of recently reported cases in India to seven. A private laboratory confirmed the infections in two children, who have since recovered and been discharged. Samples have been sent to AIIMS virology for further analysis.
This follows Monday’s announcement of five HMPV cases, including the first two in Bengaluru, Karnataka. While the recent reports have raised concerns, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) assures the public that HMPV is already circulating globally and that there is no evidence of an unusual surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases across the country. The ICMR and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) network are actively monitoring the situation, and the Union Health Ministry is also keeping a close watch. The ICMR emphasizes that HMPV is not a new virus and has been circulating globally for many years.
