**New Delhi, [Date of Publication]:** The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the dates for the Delhi Assembly elections, setting the stage for a high-stakes contest between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Indian National Congress. Voting will be held on February 5th, 2025, with results declared on February 8th. All 70 seats will be contested in a single phase.
The AAP, which secured landslide victories in the 2015 and 2020 elections, is seeking a third consecutive term. In 2020, they won 62 out of 70 seats, building upon their 67-seat win in 2015. The party’s previous government, formed in 2013 in alliance with the Congress, lasted only 49 days after Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal resigned.
The BJP, however, is confident of a victory. BJP MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat stated that the public will choose a government focused on development, accusing the AAP of failing to provide basic amenities. BJP MP Manoj Tiwari echoed this sentiment, launching attacks on Chief Minister Kejriwal over the alleged excise scam and accusing AAP of intimidating election officials.
The ECI, in a press conference led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, confirmed the presence of 1.55 crore voters, including 1,261 third-gender voters and 2.08 lakh new voters. The commission reiterated the reliability of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), dismissing concerns about tampering. The 70 seats include 12 reserved constituencies. Over 13,000 polling booths will be set up across Delhi. CEC Kumar expressed hope for high voter turnout.
The campaign has already begun, with AAP launching its campaign song, “Phir Laenge Kejriwal” (We will bring Kejriwal back again). Meanwhile, accusations have been flying, with Congress candidate Alka Lamba condemning comments made by BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri, while Congress’ Sandeep Dikshit accused AAP of widespread use of paid workers, alleging expenditure reaching hundreds of crores. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva also criticized the AAP government for alleged corruption and attempts to influence the election. The upcoming elections promise a fierce battle for power in the capital.
