**NEW DELHI** – The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the dates for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. Voting will be held on February 5th, 2025, with results declared on February 8th. The current 70-member assembly’s term concludes on February 23rd. This will be a single-phase election, in line with past Delhi Assembly elections.
The final voter list, containing 1,55,24,858 registered voters (84,49,645 male and 71,73,952 female), was released earlier. Recent allegations of voter name removals by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MPs Sanjay Singh and Raghav Chadha were dismissed as unfounded by the New Delhi District Election Officer.
The announcement comes amidst a heated political battle between the ruling AAP and the BJP. AAP, which won 62 out of 70 seats in the 2020 elections, faces a challenge from the BJP which secured 8 seats. The Congress party, which ruled Delhi for 15 years, failed to win a single seat in the last two elections.
Reactions to the election date announcement have been varied. BJP state president Virender Sachdeva commented on the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). TMC leader Kunal Ghosh expressed hope for AAP’s return to power, while BJP election in-charge Baijayant Panda criticized the AAP’s performance over the past decade.
All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) plans to contest in approximately 10-12 constituencies, aiming to be a kingmaker in the elections. BJP candidate Arvinder Lovely criticized the AAP’s governance record, citing issues like poor roads and sewage systems.
