**Gangtok, Sikkim –** Union Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh inaugurated India’s first organic fisheries cluster in Sikkim on January 6th, 2024. The cluster, located in Soreng District, aims to boost farmer incomes and promote sustainable aquaculture by producing antibiotic, chemical, and pesticide-free fish for eco-conscious global markets.
The initiative aligns with Sikkim’s existing commitment to organic farming. The Fisheries Ministry stated that the project focuses on ecologically sound fish farming, minimizing environmental impact and promoting sustainable production practices.
Simultaneously, Minister Singh launched and laid the foundation for 50 projects totaling ₹50 crore (approximately $6 million USD) across northeastern India (excluding Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram) under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) scheme. These projects further support the development of sustainable fisheries in the region.
