**Bengaluru, January 7, 2025** – A 48-year-old businessman, Kalol Dutta, allegedly ended his life at a lodge in Hulimavu on Monday due to persistent harassment from his business partner, A.J. Mariswamy. Dutta, who ran a catering business supplying food to hospital canteens since 2018, had partnered with Mariswamy on a profit-sharing basis.
The partnership suffered significant losses during the Coronavirus pandemic, leading to Mariswamy allegedly harassing Dutta to cover the debt. Despite Dutta taking out loans and selling valuables to repay the losses, the harassment continued, according to his wife, Sajini Dutta. She stated in her complaint that Mariswamy verbally abused her husband daily and demanded he hand over the hospital canteen business.
Unable to cope with the alleged harassment, Dutta checked into a lodge and took his own life. Police have registered a case against Mariswamy under section 108 (abetment to suicide) and are conducting further investigations.
