**Patna, India** – Bihar state experienced three tremors on Tuesday, all stemming from a powerful earthquake that struck Tibet earlier in the day. The first tremor, measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale, hit at 6:35 AM, causing temporary train disruptions in Kishanganj and prompting residents to evacuate their homes. Two smaller aftershocks, measuring 3.5 and 3.1, followed at 5:19 PM and 5:25 PM respectively. Despite the strong initial quake and subsequent tremors, no injuries or significant damage have been reported in Bihar.
The epicenter of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake was located 10 kilometers below the surface in Shijiang, Tibet. The National Center for Seismology (NCS) in India confirmed the readings. Bihar falls under seismic zone 4, indicating a higher risk of earthquakes compared to other parts of India.
The same earthquake, which resulted in 53 deaths and 62 injuries in Tibet according to Xinhua, was also felt in neighboring countries Nepal and Bhutan, as well as in the Indian states of Sikkim and Uttarakhand. While tremors were felt across a wide area, the impact in Bihar was limited to shaking and brief disruptions. Experts attribute the earthquake to the movement and collision of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface.
