**Erode, Tamil Nadu –** Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) president G.K. Vasan has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the recent sexual assault case at Anna University. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, January 5th, 2024, Vasan criticized the lack of progress in the investigation, 15 days after the crime. He demanded swift action and the death penalty for the accused.
Vasan expressed concerns about Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s silence on the matter, suggesting political influence and undermining public trust in the DMK government’s ability to maintain law and order. He further linked the incident to the alleged rise in drug and alcohol abuse under the DMK’s rule. He claimed that even allies of the ruling party who have spoken out about the case are being targeted.
Beyond the assault case, Vasan also opposed the proposed merger of certain village panchayats with municipal corporations, deeming it impractical. He urged the state government to withdraw the plan. He also highlighted the high number of cancer cases in Erode district, calling for a joint central and state government study and the establishment of a specialized cancer treatment facility. Finally, he demanded a halt to the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited’s pipeline project, citing concerns about its impact on agricultural lands and farmers’ livelihoods.
