**Auckland, New Zealand** – Sumit Nagal, India’s top-ranked singles player, has secured a place in the main draw of the ATP 250 ASB Classic in Auckland after a hard-fought victory over higher-ranked opponent Adrian Mannarino. The 26-year-old, currently ranked 98th in the world, defeated the world number 66 Frenchman in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-3, in the final qualifying round on Sunday.
Nagal’s win marks a significant turnaround after a period of inconsistent form that saw him exit several tournaments early. The victory against a player who reached the top 20 last year is expected to be a major confidence boost as Nagal prepares for the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season, starting January 12th in Melbourne. The ASB Classic will serve as valuable preparation for the major tournament.
Interestingly, Nagal has opted to skip India’s upcoming Davis Cup tie against Togo in New Delhi to focus on his individual performance.
