Mon Jan 06 11:49:17 IST 2025: **Pakistan’s Masood and Azam Smash Test Record in Cape Town Thriller**
CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA – Pakistan’s fightback in the second Test against South Africa has produced a record-breaking opening partnership. Forced to follow-on after being bowled out for 194 in response to South Africa’s massive 615, Pakistan showed remarkable resilience on day three. Captain Shan Masood, who has faced criticism for a recent lack of runs, scored a century (100*), becoming the first Pakistani captain to achieve this feat in South Africa.
Masood and Babar Azam (58) put on a stunning 205-run opening stand, the highest ever partnership for any team while following on in Test cricket. This surpassed the previous record of 204 runs set by Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie of South Africa against England at Lord’s in 2008. The partnership was broken just before stumps when Babar was dismissed by Marco Jansen.
Despite the late wicket, Pakistan ended the day on 213/1, still 208 runs behind but with a fighting chance on day four. South Africa remains the favorite, but Pakistan’s spirited performance has extended the contest. The match is expected to remain closely fought.
