Mon Jan 06 11:49:40 IST 2025: ## India Monitors China’s Respiratory Virus Surge, Highlights Gaps in Domestic Testing
**NEW DELHI, January 6, 2025** – While a surge in acute respiratory illnesses, including those caused by the human metapneumovirus (HMPV), is gripping parts of China, particularly its northern provinces, Indian health officials are closely monitoring the situation. Although Chinese authorities report the overall number of cases will be lower than in 2023, and the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention haven’t issued warnings, Indian media has extensively covered the situation, focusing on an alleged “outbreak.”
A recent meeting of India’s Joint Monitoring Group under the Union Health Ministry concluded that the situation in China is typical for this time of year, with common seasonal pathogens driving the increase in respiratory diseases. HMPV, first identified in 2001, commonly infects children under five, causing upper and lower respiratory tract infections. While usually mild, it can lead to severe illness in young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals. Globally, HMPV accounts for 3-10% of children’s hospital admissions for acute lower respiratory infections.
India’s response highlights a critical gap in its disease surveillance system. While China’s high number of HMPV cases reflects increased surveillance and testing, India lacks widely available, affordable diagnostic tests for the virus. The country is only now expanding HMPV testing beyond its Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) network. Experts emphasize the urgent need for a regulatory framework to expedite approvals for diagnostic tests, especially during outbreaks of novel or less-known pathogens. The 1% fatality rate in young children underscores the importance of prompt detection and treatment.
