**Hyderabad, January 6, 2025** – A 23-year-old B.Tech student, P. Ankitha, has been arrested along with her husband and three accomplices for attempting to rob the Union Bank branch in Amarchinta, Wanaparthy district, Telangana. The audacious attempt, which occurred on December 27, 2024, was foiled, leaving the bank’s strongroom untouched.
Police investigations revealed Ankitha masterminded the plot to repay debts incurred after a previous job scam. Three years ago, she lost ₹5 lakh to a fraudster promising a job with the South Central Railway. To recoup her losses, she allegedly defrauded three others of ₹18 lakh, using the money for a lavish lifestyle and trips to Goa. Facing potential legal repercussions from her victims, she involved her husband, R. Jagadishwar Reddy (32), to help resolve their financial crisis.
Inspired by online videos of bank robberies, Ankitha meticulously planned the heist, even conducting reconnaissance of several banks before selecting the Amarchinta branch due to its secluded location. The gang removed window grills, entered the building, and attempted to break open the strongroom using crowbars and spanners. However, they were unsuccessful and, fearing detection, cut the surveillance camera cables and stole the Digital Video Recorder (DVR).
The crime was discovered on December 30, 2024, when bank staff noticed the damaged strongroom handle. Police launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of the suspects on Sunday, January 5, 2025, during a routine vehicle check. The DVR was recovered, and Ankitha confessed to her role as the mastermind. Along with her husband, 42-year-old R. Bhaskar Reddy, 43-year-old M. Nagaraju, and 19-year-old K. Ganesh were also apprehended.
Wanaparthy Superintendent of Police Ravula Giridhar lauded the police’s quick work and vigilance in apprehending the suspects. The incident highlights a sophisticated attempt at bank robbery, showcasing the lengths some individuals will go to address financial difficulties. All five accused are currently in police custody.
