Mon Jan 06 11:49:41 IST 2025: ## India Reports First Case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)

**Bengaluru, India** – India has confirmed its first case of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus similar to COVID-19 in its symptoms, in an 8-month-old child in Bengaluru. While a private hospital, Baptist Hospital, initially reported the positive test, the Karnataka health department clarified that it did not conduct the test itself.

HMPV causes cold-like symptoms, including cough, fever, and runny nose, and is most impactful on young children, particularly those under two years old. The virus’s spread is similar to COVID-19 and influenza, transmitting through coughs and sneezes and contact with contaminated surfaces.

The central government, however, has downplayed concerns, stating that HMPV is a common respiratory virus during flu season and that the current situation is not unusual considering the season. They emphasized India’s robust influenza surveillance system and its preparedness to manage respiratory illnesses. As a precautionary measure, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will increase the number of labs testing for HMPV and enhance year-round monitoring.

While HMPV shares similarities with the coronavirus in its respiratory impact, transmission, and vulnerable groups (children, the elderly, and those with weakened immunity), it is not a new virus. It has been identified globally for over two decades, and there is no evidence of a rapidly spreading variant like those seen with COVID-19. Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV, though symptoms are typically manageable at home. Severe cases may require oxygen therapy, IV fluids, and corticosteroids. The World Health Organization (WHO) has not yet issued an official statement on the increasing HMPV cases in China. Indian health officials have also stressed that the situation is not cause for serious alarm within the country.
