Sun Jan 05 14:47:48 UTC 2025: ## Andhra Pradesh Reports No Cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)
**Vijayawada, January 5, 2025** – Andhra Pradesh’s Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, Dr. K. Padmavathi, has confirmed that no cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported in the state. In a press release issued today, Dr. Padmavathi reassured the public that there is no cause for alarm regarding the virus, which has been identified in China.
While acknowledging that HMPV spreads similarly to the Coronavirus, primarily affecting children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, Dr. Padmavathi emphasized the importance of preventative measures. The virus is transmitted through respiratory droplets produced by coughing or sneezing, close contact, and contact with contaminated surfaces. Symptoms, which typically appear within three to ten days of exposure, mimic those of a common cold, including cough, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, and respiratory issues. In severe cases, pneumonia or bronchitis can develop.
Dr. Padmavathi recommended that individuals exhibiting symptoms self-isolate and seek medical advice, strongly discouraging self-medication. She noted that there is currently no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for HMPV, but that supportive care, including pain relief and oxygen therapy, is available in government hospitals. These hospitals are prepared to provide appropriate treatment for severely affected children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immunity. The director urged the public to follow similar precautions to those observed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
