**TIRUCHI, January 5, 2025** – With the five-year term of elected representatives in rural local bodies ending on Sunday, special officers will assume control of the 404 village panchayats and 14 panchayat unions in the Tiruchi district. The state government’s decision follows a delay in local body elections due to ongoing delimitation and reorganization of rural local bodies. This process is expected to take several months to complete.
Until new elections are held, Block Development Officers will serve as Special Officers for panchayats, while Assistant Directors of Panchayats and Audit will manage panchayat unions. The Project Director of the District Rural Development Agency will oversee the district panchayat’s responsibilities. The District Collector will maintain overall supervision. Authorities assure that infrastructure development projects will continue uninterrupted.
