**Meerut, Uttar Pradesh –** Budget hotel chain OYO has implemented a new check-in policy in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, prohibiting unmarried couples from staying at its partner hotels. The policy, effective immediately, requires all couples to provide proof of their relationship upon check-in, regardless of whether the booking was made online.
The decision follows feedback from local residents and civil society groups in Meerut, who had previously petitioned OYO to address concerns about unmarried couples staying in its hotels. Similar petitions have reportedly been received from other cities.
OYO’s Region Head for North India, Pawas Sharma, stated that the policy is part of a broader initiative to enhance safety and build trust among its diverse customer base, including families, students, and business travelers. The company has launched several nationwide initiatives to promote safe hospitality practices, such as seminars with police and hotel partners, and crackdowns on unethical hotels and unauthorized establishments using OYO branding.
While currently implemented only in Meerut, OYO may expand the policy to other cities depending on the results of this pilot program. The move marks a significant shift in OYO’s approach to guest accommodations and reflects increasing pressure to address local sensitivities regarding unmarried couples staying in hotels.
