Sun Jan 05 14:54:20 UTC 2025: ## OYO Restricts Unmarried Couples’ Check-in in Meerut, Citing Local Sensibilities
**Meerut, India** – Budget hotel chain OYO has implemented a new check-in policy in Meerut, restricting unmarried couples from checking into its partner hotels. The policy, effective immediately, allows hotels to refuse bookings from couples who cannot provide proof of their relationship.
According to OYO, the decision aligns with local social sensitivities and empowers individual hotels to assess bookings based on their judgment. Pawas Sharma, OYO’s Regional Head for North India, stated that the company is committed to “safe and responsible hospitality practices,” while acknowledging the need to work with local law enforcement and community groups.
The policy change is part of OYO’s broader initiative to improve its image as a safe and family-friendly brand. While the policy currently applies only to Meerut, OYO indicated that it may be expanded to other cities based on further feedback. The company is also undertaking pan-India initiatives to improve hotel safety, including blacklisting establishments involved in illegal activities and taking action against those using OYO branding without authorization. OYO maintains that it will regularly review the impact of this new couple-check-in policy.
