Sun Jan 05 08:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Oyo Restricts Unmarried Couples from Checking into Hotels in India

**Meerut, India** – Oyo, a major hotel and travel booking company, has implemented a new check-in policy restricting unmarried couples from booking rooms in its partner hotels. The policy, initially rolled out in Meerut, requires all couples to provide proof of their relationship upon check-in, regardless of whether the booking was made online.

The company cited sensitivity to local social norms as the reason for the change. Oyo has empowered its partner hotels to reject bookings from unmarried couples at their discretion, aligning with local sensitivities. Sources familiar with the policy change indicated that the policy may be expanded to other cities based on feedback. Reports suggest Oyo received pressure from social groups in Meerut and other cities regarding unmarried couples staying in its hotels.

In a statement to PTI, Oyo’s North India regional head, Pawan Sharma, emphasized the company’s commitment to “safe and responsible hospitality practices.” While respecting individual freedoms, Sharma acknowledged Oyo’s responsibility to listen to and work with law enforcement and civil society groups in these markets. The company will continue to review the policy and its impact, he added. The new policy marks a significant shift in Oyo’s approach to unmarried couples’ accommodations in India.
