WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) – A major winter storm has brought blizzard conditions and hazardous travel to much of Kansas and parts of Nebraska and Colorado, resulting in numerous accidents and prompting authorities to urge residents to stay off the roads.

A blizzard warning remains in effect for portions of central, south-central, and southeast Kansas until 6 PM CST this evening, with some areas under a warning until midnight. Snow accumulations are expected to reach between 3 and 16 inches in various locations, accompanied by high winds gusting up to 50 mph, causing near-zero visibility in many areas. A Winter Storm Warning is also in effect for other areas of Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado, with varying levels of snow and ice accumulation. A Winter Weather Advisory is in place for some regions experiencing lighter snowfall and ice.

Wichita police reported multiple accidents early Saturday morning, including vehicles overturned on I-235 and Kellogg. Officer Kristopher Gupilan stressed the importance of staying home if possible, but advised those who must travel to be well-prepared with emergency supplies such as flashlights, blankets, food, water, and a fully charged cell phone.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) recommends checking road conditions before traveling by calling 511. Authorities across the affected states are urging residents to heed warnings and avoid unnecessary travel due to the extremely hazardous conditions. Wind chill temperatures as low as 10 to 15 below zero are also forecast for Sunday morning.
