**New Delhi, India** – Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a 13-kilometer stretch of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor on Sunday, connecting Sahibabad and New Ashok Nagar. This expansion marks a significant step towards easing congestion and improving commute times in the National Capital Region (NCR).
The 84-kilometer RRTS corridor, costing ₹30,274 crore, aims to reduce travel time between Delhi’s Jangpura and Meerut’s Modipuram to just one hour. Upon completion in 2025, the system is projected to carry 800,000 passengers daily across its 25 stations. The line will feature 68 kilometers of elevated track, 13 kilometers underground, and 3 kilometers at grade.
The newly inaugurated section brings the operational length of the “Namo Bharat” RRTS to 55 kilometers. Fares range from ₹20 to ₹225, depending on distance and class. Unlike traditional metro or railway systems, the RRTS trains operate at speeds exceeding 160 km/h, offering significantly faster and more frequent service (trains every 15 minutes).
The RRTS is a joint venture between the Indian government and the states of Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi, managed by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC). Operation and maintenance for the next 12 years (with a five-year option) have been awarded to Deutsche Bahn, Germany’s national railway company. The 210 coaches comprising the trainsets are manufactured by Alstom in Savli, Gujarat. The project’s foundation stone was laid in March 2019, with the initial 17-kilometer section opening in October 2023. The Delhi section will include four stations, with approximately 3.8 kilometers of underground track. A proposed two-kilometer extension from Sarai Kale Khan to Jangpura is also in the works.
