**New Delhi, January 5, 2025** – Indian-origin technology companies secured a significant share of the H-1B visas issued by the United States in the April-September 2024 period, according to a new analysis. Data from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services reveals that approximately 24,766 out of 130,000 H-1B visas went to Indian firms, representing roughly one-fifth of the total.
Infosys led the pack with 8,140 visas, followed closely by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) with 5,274 and HCL America with 2,953. Only Amazon Com Services LLC surpassed Infosys, receiving 9,265 visas. Cognizant, originally founded in Chennai, secured the third-highest number of visas with 6,321. Wipro and Tech Mahindra received 1,634 and 1,199 visas respectively.
The H-1B program allows US companies to temporarily employ foreign workers in specialized occupations. While Indian IT firms have consistently benefited from this program, the report highlights ongoing regulatory changes and shifting public sentiment surrounding its future. The balance between US business needs for skilled labor and broader immigration policy reforms will be crucial in determining the program’s long-term trajectory.
Adding to the debate, Elon Musk, a former H-1B visa holder and CEO of Tesla, recently reiterated his support for the program on X, emphasizing the importance of welcoming skilled workers from diverse backgrounds. His statement contrasts with the stance of President-elect Donald Trump, whose previous administration sought to restrict the program in 2020, citing concerns about replacing American workers with lower-paid foreign employees.
