**Chennai, January 5, 2025** – The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will install rubber safety strips to bridge the gap between train doors and platforms, addressing accessibility concerns for people with disabilities. This long-awaited improvement comes a decade after the metro’s launch, following numerous complaints about the gap posing challenges for wheelchair users and those using walking sticks.
The 10mm-thick rubber strips will be fitted at all doors across the 54km network. CMRL officials stated that bids have been floated, and installation is expected to begin later this year.
Vaishnavi Jayakumar of the Disability Rights Alliance welcomed the initiative but stressed the need for timely implementation. While acknowledging the improvement, Jayakumar advocated for more inclusive solutions like ramps in the future, especially considering the planned introduction of driverless trains in Phase II. Jayakumar emphasized the importance of incorporating accessibility into future projects to ensure a safer and more inclusive transportation system.
