**Vellore, January 5, 2025** – A recent webinar hosted by Naruvi Hospitals in Vellore, in collaboration with The Hindu, highlighted the importance of calcium intake, regular physical activity, and lifestyle choices in preventing osteoporosis. The session, part of the ‘Healthy India, Happy India’ initiative, featured leading endocrinologists who discussed the disease and its treatment.

Dr. Sai Krishna Chaitanya explained that osteoporosis weakens bones, increasing fracture risk due to an imbalance between bone resorption and remodelling. He identified key risk factors including age, gender, low body weight, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, low physical activity, and family history.

Dr. M.S. Seshadri emphasized the crucial role of adequate calcium intake, particularly from dairy products, and regular outdoor activity in building strong bones, especially during growth years. He acknowledged that modern lifestyles often hinder these factors, making supplements necessary in some cases. He also addressed hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women, outlining different approaches based on individual circumstances.

Dr. Shriram Mahadevan detailed various treatment options for osteoporosis, including bisphosphonates and bone-forming agents, emphasizing the importance of adhering to prescribed treatment durations and avoiding abrupt cessation.

The webinar, titled ‘Osteoporosis: What a Common Man Needs to Know,’ is available online. The experts’ consensus stressed the proactive role individuals can play in maintaining bone health through lifestyle choices and seeking medical advice when necessary.
