Sun Jan 05 20:20:00 IST 2025: ## Pulitzer Winner Quits Washington Post After Cartoon Mocking Tech CEOs and Trump Is Rejected

**Washington, D.C.** – Ann Telnaes, a Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist for The Washington Post, has resigned after the paper’s editorial page editor rejected a cartoon criticizing tech CEOs for their perceived subservience to President-elect Donald Trump. The cartoon depicted figures like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos (also the Post’s owner), Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, and OpenAI’s Sam Altman showering Trump with cash.

The rejection follows a pattern of controversy at the Post, including owner Jeff Bezos’s decision to block publication of an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris in the lead-up to the 2024 election. This decision led to a significant drop in digital subscriptions, with approximately 300,000 cancellations. Bezos has since stated he doesn’t regret the decision but acknowledges poor timing. Similarly, Los Angeles Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong blocked a Harris endorsement at his paper.

Telnaes’ cartoon, submitted before Christmas, was deemed redundant by Editorial Page Editor David Shipley, who cited the recent publication of related columns. Telnaes, however, argues that the rejection represents censorship and a failure to uphold journalistic integrity, particularly given the involvement of billionaire owners influencing editorial decisions. She stated that she has never before been prevented from commenting on a topic through cartoon censorship.

The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists issued a statement supporting Telnaes, condemning the censorship as “craven” and highlighting the erosion of journalistic integrity at the Post. Shipley, while respecting Telnaes’ contributions, maintains his decision was based on avoiding repetition and not a reflection of any political bias. The incident adds to a growing list of departures from the Post in recent months, raising concerns about the paper’s editorial independence and internal culture.
