Bijapur, Chhattisgarh – The administration has launched a demolition drive against Suresh Chandrakar, the prime suspect in the murder of journalist Mukesh Chandrakar. JCBs were used to raze allegedly illegal constructions on Chandrakar’s properties. This follows the discovery of Mukesh Chandrakar’s body in a septic tank on Chandrakar’s property on January 3rd. The journalist had been missing since January 1st.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate the case, and three of Suresh Chandrakar’s bank accounts have been seized. Mukesh Chandrakar’s body was found in a severely decomposed state, but identified through his clothing. Police had initially searched Suresh Chandrakar’s home after Mukesh Chandrakar went missing following a call from Suresh’s brother, Ritesh.

The case has highlighted the tense relationship between the media and the powerful contractor lobby in Bastar. Mukesh Chandrakar had reportedly exposed corruption by Suresh Chandrakar, who had secured a ₹120 crore road construction contract. Following Mukesh’s reporting, an investigation into Chandrakar was ordered.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra condemned the murder and demanded compensation for the victim’s family. The incident has sparked political finger-pointing, with Congress blaming the BJP government for deteriorating law and order and the BJP alleging links between the contractor and Congress leaders. Union Minister of State Toghan Sahu also condemned the murder. The investigation is ongoing.
