**KOZHIKODE, January 4, 2025** – Smaram, a Kozhikode-based furniture firm, is making waves with its unique collection crafted from reclaimed wood salvaged from century-old Kerala homes. Founded four years ago by Stapati, an architecture firm, Smaram translates to “memory” in Malayalam, reflecting the firm’s commitment to preserving the history embedded within the wood.
The furniture, ranging from cots and tables to chests of drawers, showcases a blend of traditional Kerala craftsmanship and modern design. Architects Akshay Salil and the Smaram team carefully dismantle wood from old mansions, repurposing beams, rafters, and other elements into contemporary pieces. The “Shayya” cot, for instance, features a headboard crafted from the rafters of a historic Kerala home, while the “Arah” chest of drawers combines traditional granary design with modern metal legs.
Smaram’s skilled carpenters work with various local wood types, including jackfruit, mango, teak, and venga. The firm embraces the natural imperfections and age markings of the wood, considering them integral to the character and uniqueness of each piece. Modern materials like glass and steel are also incorporated, as seen in the “Bhojan” dining table with acrylic legs and the “Yuj” coffee table with a steel frame and movable wooden squares.
Each piece tells a story, with prices starting at ₹37,000. Smaram’s unique approach has garnered significant attention, particularly through Instagram. The firm aims to reduce reliance on new raw materials while promoting sustainable and aesthetically pleasing furniture design.
