**CHENNAI, January 4, 2025** – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) conducted a city-wide cleanup of its burial grounds on Friday, removing over 159 tonnes of waste. The early morning operation, lasting from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., involved clearing 93.38 tonnes of general waste and 65.78 tonnes of construction debris from 203 locations. In addition, 666 overgrown bushes and weeds were removed to improve sanitation and accessibility.
The GCC press release stated that stagnant water was removed to prevent mosquito breeding, and hazardous tree stumps were cleared. Waste bins and other sanitation facilities were also repaired or replaced.
This initiative follows a larger campaign from August 21 to December 30, 2024, during which 5,900 tonnes of waste were removed daily across 15 zones. The broader campaign included cleaning streets, pavements, and public spaces.
