**Indore, Madhya Pradesh, January 4, 2025** – The Madhya Pradesh government has temporarily halted the disposal of 337 tonnes of toxic waste from the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy following widespread protests in Pithampur, where the waste was to be incinerated. The waste, transported from the Union Carbide factory site on January 1st, was to be disposed of in accordance with court orders.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced the decision late Friday night after a high-level meeting. He stated that the government would present the situation to the court and await further instructions before proceeding. This action follows protests, including attempted self-immolation by two individuals, and a town-wide bandh (shutdown) called by the Pithampur Bachao Samiti (Save Pithampur Committee).
“The state government stands firmly with the people,” Yadav said, emphasizing the government’s commitment to public safety. He appealed for calm and urged citizens not to believe rumors.
The court had set a January 4th deadline for the waste disposal and expected a report by January 6th. Yadav clarified that the transportation of the waste was undertaken in compliance with court orders and safety protocols. However, given the public outcry and concerns, the government decided to seek further judicial guidance before resuming the disposal process. Prohibitory orders were imposed around the incineration site to maintain order. The government’s next steps will depend on the court’s response.
