Sat Jan 04 02:04:46 UTC 2025: ## Delhi Airport Plunged into Chaos by Record-Breaking Fog
**New Delhi, January 4, 2025** – A record-breaking fog engulfed New Delhi overnight, causing widespread disruption at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). Zero visibility conditions persisted for nine hours, from 11:30 PM on January 3rd to 8:30 AM on January 4th, leading to significant flight delays and diversions.
Over 100 flights were delayed, and 19 were diverted, according to flight tracking website Flightradar24. The runway visual range dropped to below 50 meters at times, making landings difficult even with advanced technology. Airlines like IndiGo and Air India issued advisories to passengers, citing reduced visibility as the cause of the disruptions.
The dense fog also impacted other parts of northern India, including Punjab, Haryana, and parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Tripura, Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram. While daytime visibility improved somewhat in some areas, many flights continued to face delays and cancellations.
The Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) stated that flights not CAT III compliant (able to operate in low visibility) were most affected. Passengers were urged to contact their respective airlines for updated flight information. Friday also saw over 400 flight delays due to poor weather conditions. The IMD scientist R K Jenamani confirmed the unprecedented nine-hour period of zero visibility.
The severe fog highlights the ongoing challenges posed by adverse weather conditions on air travel in the region.
