Sat Jan 04 08:58:28 UTC 2025: ## Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) Outbreak in China Sparks Global Concern

**Beijing/New Delhi** – A surge in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections in China has raised concerns globally, with reports suggesting overflowing hospitals and a rise in fatalities. The situation has drawn parallels to the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting anxieties about a potential international spread.

While Chinese hospitals are reportedly overwhelmed, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated Friday that the current respiratory infection surge is typical for winter and that travel to China remains safe. However, images and social media posts circulating online depict crowded hospitals and crematoria, fueling concerns about the virus’s severity and spread.

The Indian Ministry of Health, while acknowledging the situation in China, has reassured its citizens that there is currently no cause for alarm. The ministry emphasized that HMPV is similar to other viruses causing common colds, primarily affecting young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. They stated that while HMPV cases typically rise during winter months, India’s healthcare system is prepared to handle any potential increase.

Experts describe HMPV as a common virus that becomes more active during colder months, causing symptoms such as cough, fever, and nasal congestion. In severe cases, it can lead to pneumonia and bronchiolitis. Transmission occurs through coughing, sneezing, and close contact. Symptoms typically appear within five days of infection.

Although HMPV is not new, the current situation in China has raised questions about its potential to spread internationally, mirroring the concerns surrounding the initial COVID-19 outbreak. The Indian government continues to monitor the situation closely.
