**Beijing, China** – Following the COVID-19 pandemic, China is grappling with a surge in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) infections, particularly among children. Social media reports and statements from Chinese health officials indicate a rapid spread of the virus, leading to increased hospitalizations and strain on healthcare facilities.

According to the Chinese Center for Disease Control (CDC), HMPV positivity rates have recently spiked in children under 14. Symptoms range from common cold-like ailments to severe pneumonia, with reports of increasing pneumonia cases and even “white lung” instances among children. The surge is occurring alongside other viral infections including influenza A, mycoplasma pneumonia, and COVID-19, placing further burden on hospitals and crematoriums, according to reports.

Dr. Li Tongzheng, a leading physician at Beijing You’an Hospital, stated that HMPV spreads through respiratory droplets and contact transmission. He emphasized preventative measures like mask-wearing, frequent handwashing, and boosting immunity. Currently, no vaccine exists for HMPV.

While HMPV is not a new virus, having been discovered in 2001, it primarily affects the respiratory system and disproportionately impacts children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. The virus’s spread underscores the continued challenges faced by China’s healthcare system in managing respiratory illnesses. The situation is being closely monitored by health authorities.
