Fri Jan 03 12:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Surgeon General Calls for Cancer Warning Labels on Alcoholic Beverages
**Washington D.C.** – U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy is urging Congress to mandate cancer warning labels on alcoholic beverages, citing a new report linking alcohol consumption to at least seven types of cancer. The report highlights alcohol as a leading preventable cause of cancer, responsible for an estimated 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 related deaths annually in the U.S.
Dr. Murthy’s recommendation comes amid a broader reassessment of the health effects of alcohol, particularly in light of growing research linking even moderate drinking to increased cancer risk. While previous dietary guidelines often suggested moderate alcohol consumption might offer cardiovascular benefits, this view is being challenged by accumulating evidence.
Current alcohol labels warn against drinking during pregnancy and while operating machinery, but Dr. Murthy argues for stronger warnings explicitly stating the increased risk of cancers including breast, colon, and five other malignancies. The surgeon general’s call for updated labels represents a significant step in the ongoing debate surrounding alcohol consumption and public health. Legislative action by Congress would be required to implement these new warning labels.
