NEW ORLEANS — The Sugar Bowl College Football Playoff quarterfinal game between Notre Dame and Georgia, originally scheduled for Wednesday, was postponed and rescheduled for Thursday following a deadly attack in New Orleans that killed at least 14 and injured dozens. The game, taking place at the Caesars Superdome less than a mile from the attack site on Bourbon Street, proceeded with heightened security measures.
FBI officials have identified the attack as an act of terrorism carried out by a lone wolf. A heavy police presence, including local, federal, and military personnel, was visible throughout the city, particularly around the Superdome. The ATF deployed explosive detection canines, and road closures were expanded as part of the enhanced security plan. Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick stated that security was at a level comparable to Super Bowl preparations.
Despite the tragedy, the French Quarter showed signs of recovery, with tourists returning and businesses gradually reopening. However, the atmosphere remained tense. Even entering the Superdome for media required extensive security checks, resembling airport-level screening.
On the field, Georgia will face a significant challenge with starting quarterback Carson Beck sidelined due to elbow surgery after an injury in the SEC championship. Gunner Stockton is expected to take his place. Notre Dame, having defeated Indiana in the first round, enters as a favorite against Georgia, who had a bye as the No. 2 seed. The game is expected to be a defensive battle, with the outcome potentially hinging on turnovers and special teams play.
The game, televised nationally on ESPN, kicked off at 4 p.m. ET, with a noticeable increase in security and traffic compared to the previous day. The Bulldogs, after being on lockdown at their hotel Wednesday, were seen leaving for a walkthrough the night before the game. The atmosphere inside the Superdome, however, appeared largely business as usual once the game began.
