Fri Jan 03 13:08:29 UTC 2025: ## Gobichettipalayam Shops Shut Down in Protest Over Tax Hikes
**Gobichettipalayam, Tamil Nadu, January 3, 2025** – Over 1,500 shops in Gobichettipalayam remained closed today in protest against increased taxes and the implementation of an 18% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on commercial property rent.
The strike, called by the Gobichettipalayam All Traders’ Association, also targeted a 1% penalty for delayed property tax payments and a 6% annual municipal tax hike. Traders further demanded a reduction in annual trade license fees, currently ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹5,000, and the implementation of monthly electricity meter readings.
The shutdown significantly impacted the town, with most shops in the bus stand area and commercial streets remaining closed. Movie screenings were also cancelled. However, essential services such as pharmacies, hospitals, and bus services continued to operate normally.
