**New Delhi, January 3** – India commemorated the birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule, a pioneering social reformer and the country’s first female teacher, on January 3rd. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute, calling her a “beacon of women’s empowerment” and a leader in education and social reform. Her life serves as an inspiration for those striving for a better quality of life for all.
Born into a humble farming family, Savitribai married Jyotirao Phule at the age of nine. Despite societal obstacles, she pursued education and, along with her husband, opened the first girls’ school in Pune in 1848, becoming its first teacher. They championed education for marginalized communities, providing scholarships and raising parental awareness. They also established schools for the lower castes, facing considerable social opposition. Savitribai’s efforts extended to opposing child marriage, sati, and caste discrimination; she encouraged widow remarriage and established shelters for women in need. Even opening her well to all, defying the practice of untouchability.
Her dedication continued during the 1897 plague epidemic, where she and her adopted son ran a clinic, ultimately succumbing to the disease. Her legacy is honored through a commemorative postage stamp issued in 1998, the renaming of Pune University to Savitribai Phule Pune University, and a Google Doodle in 2017. Savitribai Phule’s life demonstrates the transformative power of education and equality, inspiring continued efforts towards social justice.
