Thu Jan 02 20:32:50 UTC 2025: ## Gaza Death Toll Soars After 34 Israeli Airstrikes: UN Official Calls for Immediate Ceasefire

**GAZA CITY** – At least 71 Palestinians were killed in 34 Israeli airstrikes across Gaza in the past 24 hours, according to Gaza’s Government Media Office. The strikes hit multiple areas, including the supposedly humanitarian zone of al-Mawasi and the densely populated Jabalia refugee camp, which has been repeatedly targeted. The death toll includes the head and deputy head of Gaza’s police force. The Remal and Shujayea neighborhoods of Gaza City and the town of az-Zawayda also suffered casualties.

Among the victims was photojournalist Hassan al-Qishaoui, bringing the total number of journalists and media workers killed in Gaza since October 7th to at least 217.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) head, Philippe Lazzarini, condemned the attacks, stating the strike on al-Mawasi – intended as a humanitarian zone – highlights the lack of safety within Gaza. He urged an immediate ceasefire to prevent further tragedies.

An Israeli army spokesperson responded to the reported death toll, asserting that the military adheres to international law and takes precautions to minimize civilian harm. However, the high civilian death toll and repeated attacks on purportedly safe zones continue to fuel international outrage and calls for an end to the ongoing conflict.
