Thu Jan 02 22:49:18 UTC 2025: ## ISIS-Inspired Attack in New Orleans Leaves 14 Dead, Dozens Injured
**New Orleans, LA** – A deadly attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day has left 14 people dead and dozens more injured after a man drove a truck into a crowd of revelers on Bourbon Street. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a Texas-born US citizen and Army veteran, was killed in a shootout with police.
Federal officials announced Thursday that Jabbar had posted five videos to Facebook in the hours before the attack, revealing his intentions and allegiance to ISIS. The videos, which are currently under review by law enforcement, detail Jabbar’s plan to initially kill his family before changing his target to maximize the impact of his actions, aiming to highlight a “war between believers and disbelievers.” He stated he had joined ISIS earlier this year.
Jabbar, who served in the Army for over a decade, including a deployment to Afghanistan, also planted two improvised explosive devices prior to the attack. An ISIS flag was found in his vehicle, a Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck rented through the platform Turo.
Authorities are investigating Jabbar’s background, which includes a history of financial struggles, divorce proceedings marked by restraining orders, and prior run-ins with the law involving theft and DUI charges. He held a real estate license and had worked for consulting firms Deloitte and Accenture. His online presence showed a more polished public image, including YouTube videos promoting his real estate business.
The investigation is also examining potential links between Jabbar and a separate incident in Las Vegas involving a Tesla Cybertruck explosion that resulted in a fatality. Both vehicles were rented through Turo, which is cooperating with law enforcement. Turo has stated that neither renter had a criminal background that would have flagged them as security threats. The company has since removed the truck used in the New Orleans attack from its platform.
The attack has sent shockwaves through the city and the nation, raising questions about radicalization and the challenges of preventing such acts of violence. The investigation is ongoing.
