**Kyiv, Ukraine** – Russia’s grinding advance in eastern Ukraine came at a devastating cost in 2024, resulting in record casualties and minimal territorial gains, according to multiple reports. While Russia claimed to seize approximately 4,168 square kilometers (0.69% of Ukraine’s territory), primarily consisting of fields and abandoned villages, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) estimates that the true cost was astronomical.
Ukraine’s military claims Russian losses in 2024 reached between 427,000 and 430,790 soldiers killed and wounded—a figure exceeding combined losses from previous years. This translates to an average daily casualty rate of over 1,180, peaking at a possible 2,200 on a single day in December. The high casualty rates, particularly in urban fighting, are attributed to the Ukrainian army’s effective defense. These losses are believed to have escalated in the final months of the year in a possible attempt to influence the US elections.
Despite increased daily territorial gains in late 2024, reaching a high of 28 square kilometers in November, the pace of advance remained agonizingly slow. The ISW projects it would take Russia at least two more years to conquer the Donetsk region alone, a key objective for President Vladimir Putin.
The human cost extended beyond Russian soldiers. Ukraine claims that thousands of North Korean mercenaries recruited by Russia suffered significant losses, with President Zelenskyy alleging extrajudicial killings of those captured by Ukrainian forces.
Russia’s manpower shortages, estimated at 1.5 million by Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service, seem to have led President Putin to prioritize the war effort over economic needs. A decree forcing undocumented migrants to leave Russia by April, while simultaneously allowing them to avoid deportation by joining the military, indicates a desperate attempt to fill its ranks.
Despite these losses, Russia continued its attacks, launching a New Year’s Day drone assault on Kyiv that resulted in two deaths. Throughout 2024, Kyiv faced over 200 aerial assaults involving hundreds of drones and missiles. Ukraine reports shooting down approximately 11,200 attack drones, including thousands of decoy Shahed drones designed to overwhelm air defenses.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has made significant strides in its own arms production. President Zelenskyy reported that 30% of Ukraine’s weaponry in 2024 was domestically produced. Ukraine also successfully employed its own domestically produced drones in strikes deep within Russian territory, including the sinking of a Russian helicopter using a SeaDragon missile launched from a naval drone.
Despite its progress in arms production, Ukraine remains heavily reliant on Western military aid. President Biden recently announced a $2.5 billion package of aid, including artillery, rockets, and armored vehicles. The war continues, leaving both sides locked in a brutal, resource-intensive conflict with staggering human costs.
