Fri Jan 03 12:33:58 UTC 2025: ## Scottish Hiker Detained in Delhi Over Banned GPS Device

**NEW DELHI** – A Scottish hiker was detained at Delhi Airport on Thursday for allegedly possessing a banned Garmin Inreach satellite messaging device. Heather, who posted about the incident on Instagram, said she was stopped by security during a routine screening before her flight to Rishikesh. Security personnel informed her that the device is illegal in India and subsequently handed her over to the police.

Heather reports being questioned at a police station and required to sign several documents before her eventual release at 9 pm. However, she is required to return for a court appearance. The incident follows a similar case last month in Goa, where a Czech national was booked for possessing a banned Garmin Edge 540 GPS device. Both cases highlight the importance of checking Indian import regulations before traveling, particularly regarding satellite communication devices. The use of such devices without proper authorization is subject to penalties under the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1933.
