NEW ORLEANS, LA – The FBI has confirmed that Shamsud-Dim Jabbar, a 42-year-old Texas resident, acted alone in the deadly New Year’s Day car-ramming attack on Bourbon Street, killing 14 and injuring at least 35. Initial reports suggesting possible accomplices have been dismissed following a thorough 24-hour investigation involving the analysis of Jabbar’s videos, phones, and extensive witness interviews.
FBI Deputy Assistant Director Christopher Raia stated that Jabbar, a US military veteran and former Deloitte consultant, rented a Ford F-150 in Houston on December 30th and drove to New Orleans on December 31st. In the hours before the attack, he posted five videos on Facebook declaring support for ISIS and outlining his intentions. The attack, described as premeditated terrorism, began around 3:15 am local time. Jabbar was killed in a shootout with law enforcement following the incident.
Two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were found near the scene, but reports of additional explosives proved inaccurate. An ISIS flag was also recovered from the truck. Authorities emphasize that the investigation is ongoing, urging anyone with information about Jabbar to contact the FBI. Over 400 tips have already been received.
The attack prompted concerns about security measures in New Orleans, but officials assured the public that Bourbon Street has reopened and security is heightened for upcoming events, including the Sugar Bowl and Mardi Gras. Mayor LaToya Cantrell and Governor Jeff Landry stressed the city’s commitment to safety and its readiness to host large-scale events. The economic impact of tourism on New Orleans was also highlighted, with officials keen to reassure visitors of the city’s continued safety and appeal.
