**New Delhi:** The Supreme Court of India has closed a case concerning the stalled “Farishtey Dilli Ke” scheme, after the Delhi government confirmed the release of funds for the program. The scheme provides free medical treatment to road accident victims in Delhi hospitals.
The court’s decision follows months of dispute between the Delhi government and the Lieutenant Governor’s (LG) office over the release of funds. The Delhi government had petitioned the Supreme Court in December 2023, alleging that the LG’s office deliberately blocked funding, effectively rendering the scheme inoperable for over a year. The petition accused health department officials of inaction and mismanagement, noting that private hospitals, facing unpaid bills, were reluctant to treat accident victims.
The Supreme Court expressed its frustration with the inter-governmental conflict, stating, “One wing of the government is fighting with another wing of the government.” Following the court’s intervention and a subsequent release of funds, the Delhi government withdrew its petition. The Supreme Court subsequently dismissed the case, concluding that the matter has been resolved. The court’s intervention ensures the resumption of the vital scheme aimed at saving the lives of road accident victims in the city.
