Fri Jan 03 08:50:00 UTC 2025: **Jamaica’s Tourism Sector Booms, Fueling Economic Growth**

KINGSTON, JAMAICA – Jamaica’s winter tourist season has gotten off to a record-breaking start, exceeding expectations and boosting the national economy. Over 125,000 visitors arrived in the first eight days alone, a 1.8% increase compared to the same period last year. This strong performance, driven by 1.6 million secured air seats and an anticipated 80% load factor, is projected to bring in over US$1.6 billion and 1.3 million visitors this winter, according to Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett.

The surge in tourism is not only filling hotel rooms but also stimulating growth across various sectors. Minister Bartlett highlighted the success of initiatives like the Agri-Linkages Exchange (ALEX) platform, which facilitated over J$750 million in transactions between small farmers and hotels this year. He stressed the need to attract larger Jamaican investors to supply the growing demand for tourism-related goods and services.

The positive trend aligns with wider Caribbean optimism. Sanovnik Destang, the new president of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association, confirmed strong demand across the region, although he noted challenges including rising operating costs and labor shortages. These shortages, he explained, are driving up wages and impacting profitability. Addressing this requires changing perceptions of hospitality work and promoting it as an attractive career path, Destang emphasized.

Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association President Robin Russell echoed the positive outlook, predicting a strong 2025, building on the momentum of a 5% increase in 2024 compared to 2023. While acknowledging setbacks like Hurricane Beryl and flight cancellations earlier this year, Russell highlighted the resurgence in bookings fueled by events and activities, including the Vybz Kartel show. Summer bookings are already looking stronger than last year.

Minister Bartlett emphasized the vital role tourism plays in Jamaica’s economy, citing 11 consecutive quarters of post-COVID growth fueled by tourism expansion. He stressed that the sector’s success underpins the stability of agriculture, manufacturing, and services, highlighting tourism’s wide-ranging impact beyond hotels and transportation, encompassing energy, water, and healthcare sectors. The strong start to the winter season underscores tourism’s critical contribution to Jamaica’s economic health and market size.
