**DAEJEON, South Korea –** Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have unveiled a groundbreaking lightweight exoskeleton, the WalkON Suit F1, enabling paraplegic individuals to walk, climb stairs, and navigate obstacles. The 50kg suit, composed of aluminum and titanium and powered by 12 electronic motors, mimics human joint movements.

The innovative design incorporates sensors that monitor 1,000 signals per second, anticipating user movements and maintaining balance. Front-mounted lenses act as “eyes,” analyzing the environment to detect obstacles and stair heights, compensating for the user’s lack of sensation.

The exoskeleton’s unique feature is its ability to autonomously approach and assist the user, even from a seated position. KAIST researcher and paraplegic Kim Seung-hwan, who demonstrated the suit’s capabilities, achieving a walking speed of 3.2 kph, stated that this self-docking feature is a key advantage. He recently won a gold medal at Cybathlon 2024 wearing the WalkON Suit F1, highlighting its success. Kim’s motivation, he explained, was to share the experience of walking with his son.

Inspiration for the project, according to team member Park Jeong-su, came from the movie *Iron Man*. The team’s goal is to seamlessly integrate the exoskeleton into the daily lives of people with disabilities.
