**Toronto, ON** – Southern Ontario is bracing for a major winter storm expected to dump up to 60 centimetres of snow on parts of the region Thursday. Environment Canada has issued heavy snowfall warnings for several areas, including Newmarket, Barrie, Kitchener, Owen Sound, and Orillia, with these locations potentially seeing at least 20 centimetres of accumulation.
The heavy snow is forecast to begin overnight Wednesday or early Thursday morning and continue into the evening. Strong winds, gusting up to 60 kilometres per hour, are also expected, leading to blowing snow and significantly reduced visibility. Environment Canada warns that travel will be hazardous and advises drivers to adjust their plans accordingly.
Snow squall warnings are in effect for the early morning hours, while weather advisories, predicting 5 to 10 centimetres of snow and reduced visibility, are in place for areas around Hamilton, Guelph, and Caledon.
While Toronto is not under a weather warning, a 70 per cent chance of flurries is forecast for Thursday, with wind gusts around 30 kilometres per hour.
Environment Canada stresses that snow squall conditions can vary considerably from region to region, urging residents to monitor weather forecasts closely.
