Wed Jan 01 21:13:00 UTC 2025: ## Saudi Arabia Launches Humanitarian Air Bridge to Syria

**Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – January 2, 2025** – Saudi Arabia has initiated a humanitarian air bridge to Syria, delivering vital aid in the wake of a devastating civil war and recent political upheaval. The initiative, spearheaded by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), aims to provide food, shelter, and medical supplies to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the air bridge is the first phase of a larger aid effort, with a subsequent land bridge planned for the coming days. This follows a recent visit by a high-ranking Saudi delegation to Damascus, where they reportedly met with Syria’s new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, of the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. Al-Sharaa’s group seized power on December 8th after a swift offensive that overthrew Bashar al-Assad.

Syria, ravaged by 13 years of civil war and Western sanctions, faces a dire humanitarian crisis. The United Nations estimates that seven out of ten Syrians require assistance. The World Health Organization (WHO) has further highlighted the critical state of the country’s healthcare system, with roughly half of its hospitals out of service.

This Saudi intervention joins other international aid efforts, including those announced by the European Union and Ukraine. While Saudi Arabia previously provided aid following the February 2023 earthquake, this latest initiative represents a significant commitment to addressing the ongoing crisis. The long-term impact of this aid and the implications of the new political landscape in Syria remain to be seen.
