**New Delhi, January 5** – A 40-year-old Delhi cafe owner, Puneet Khurana, died by suicide on New Year’s Eve, leaving behind a video recording of a heated argument with his estranged wife, Manika Pahwa. The recording, obtained by Delhi Police, reveals a contentious exchange filled with accusations and threats related to their co-owned bakery, ‘For God’s Cake’, and their ongoing divorce proceedings.
Khurana’s family alleges that Pahwa made several demands during their divorce negotiations, including a monthly payment of Rs 70,000 and lawyer’s fees, and threatened legal action if her demands were not met. They claim this relentless pressure contributed to Khurana’s suicide. The video shows Pahwa accusing Khurana of ruining her life and threatening to create a scene in his neighborhood. Khurana’s mother stated that her son had endured Pahwa’s relentless harassment for a prolonged period, silently suffering in fear of upsetting his family.
A week before his death, Pahwa posted a cryptic message on social media about escaping a toxic and abusive relationship, referring to her abusers as “insecure cowards.” This post, along with the video recording and Khurana’s family’s accusations, has sparked intense scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding his death.
Khurana’s death follows the recent suicide of a Bengaluru techie, Atul Subhash, who also accused his wife and her family of harassment in a 24-page suicide note. Subhash’s wife and her relatives have since been arrested. Both cases highlight the devastating consequences of domestic disputes and the urgent need to address issues of marital discord and harassment effectively. Delhi Police are currently investigating Khurana’s death.
