Thu Jan 02 10:22:36 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Plans to Merge Peri-Urban Panchayats with Municipalities

**Chennai, January 2, 2025** – The Tamil Nadu government’s proposal to merge 111 peri-urban panchayats with nearby municipal corporations has sparked debate. While the government provides ₹69 crore annually (₹10 lakh per panchayat) to support these areas, officials argue this funding is insufficient to address the challenges of rapid urbanization.

The proposed merger aims to leverage the resources and developmental schemes of larger urban bodies. Panchayats facing issues like escalating population density, strained financial resources, and inadequate waste management will reportedly benefit from the increased funding and expertise of the municipalities. The 111 panchayats are set to be absorbed by 16 municipal corporations, including Greater Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem, Sivakasi, Cuddalore, Avadi, Tiruchi, and Thoothukudi.

The government has previously invested ₹390 crore in improving infrastructure in peri-urban areas, including roads and streets. However, officials believe that integration into larger municipal structures will provide a more sustainable solution for these rapidly developing regions. The move is intended to ensure “balanced and sustainable development” in these areas, providing access to resources such as Chennai Metrowater. The decision, however, raises questions about the efficacy of the existing financial assistance program for peri-urban panchayats.
