Thu Jan 02 12:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Palestinian Authority Bans Al Jazeera, Accusing it of Sedition

**RAMALLAH, West Bank** – The Palestinian Authority (PA) has announced a temporary ban on Al Jazeera’s operations within its jurisdiction, citing accusations of “inciting sedition” and “interfering in internal Palestinian affairs.” The ban, effective immediately, requires Al Jazeera to close its local offices and halt all journalistic activity until it rectifies its alleged legal violations.

The PA’s official news agency, WAFA, made the announcement on Wednesday, but offered no specific examples of Al Jazeera’s alleged wrongdoing. The ban comes months after Israel also banned the Qatari-funded broadcaster on national security grounds. Footage broadcast by Al Jazeera showed Palestinian security forces delivering the ban order to one of its journalists.

Al Jazeera vehemently condemned the decision, framing it as an attempt to stifle coverage of escalating events in the occupied territories. The network maintains its reporting is legitimate.

The move has drawn criticism from Palestinian human rights groups and critics who accuse the PA of increasingly authoritarian tactics, including crackdowns on dissent and intimidation of President Mahmoud Abbas’ critics. The ban adds to the recent challenges Al Jazeera faces in operating within Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. The PA has yet to clarify what steps Al Jazeera must take to lift the ban.
