**New Delhi:** A decade after sweeping into power on an anti-corruption platform, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Arvind Kejriwal, faces mounting criticism over alleged mismanagement, broken promises, and corruption scandals. This article examines the party’s trajectory, highlighting a stark contrast between its initial idealism and its current reality.
The AAP’s rise in 2011 capitalized on public disillusionment with the Congress and widespread corruption allegations. Kejriwal, pledging to reject VIP perks and vowing a clean administration, promised transformative changes: clean air, a revitalized Yamuna river, and world-class infrastructure. However, critics now argue these promises remain largely unfulfilled.
The party’s initial commitment to transparency and anti-corruption has been severely challenged. Several key AAP leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and others, face arrests and allegations of financial irregularities, including a major liquor policy scam.
Furthermore, the promised improvements in Delhi’s education and healthcare sectors have fallen short. Government schools reportedly lack basic amenities, and the lauded Mohalla Clinics have been implicated in a scandal involving thousands of fictitious patients. The Delhi High Court has criticized the state of Delhi’s schools and the government’s failure to address various citizen concerns.
Fiscal mismanagement is another key concern. Delhi’s budget recently slipped into a deficit for the first time in decades, prompting the government to seek a significant loan. Meanwhile, the city continues to struggle with pollution, inadequate water supply, and poor infrastructure, despite repeated promises of improvement. The AAP’s handling of the pandemic, prioritizing a lavish residence for Kejriwal over addressing citizens’ needs, also drew sharp criticism.
The party’s governance in Punjab, where it holds complete power, shows similar shortcomings, with unfulfilled promises regarding women’s welfare and a breakdown of the RTI system.
The author, a BJP spokesperson, concludes that the AAP, once a symbol of hope, has failed to deliver on its promises and now stands as a prime example of how idealistic narratives can crumble under the weight of reality. The article suggests a growing disillusionment among the citizenry ahead of upcoming elections. The views expressed are those of the author.
