**COIMBATORE, January 2, 2025** – A 45-year-old man, R. Ponnusamy, was killed by a wild elephant near Periyanaickenpalayam in Coimbatore district on Thursday. Ponnusamy, who had been living alone in a shack on revenue land bordering a forest for the past 20 years, was found dead with injuries to his head and thigh consistent with a trampling.
According to the Forest Department, the land where the incident occurred is adjacent to the forest, making animal movement common in the area. A villager discovered the body while searching for his goats. The Periyanaickenpalayam forest range officer, M. Saravanan, confirmed the location of the body was approximately 300 meters from the forest boundary.
Ponnusamy’s body was sent to the Government Hospital, Mettupalayam, for a post-mortem examination. Police and forest officials are investigating the incident. The deceased had reportedly been estranged from his family for two decades.
